A commemorative bronze statue of Gallipoli artist, mapmaker, & Hamilton hero Sapper Horace Moore-Jones was unveiled in Hamilton on 27 March 2015.

New Zealand Defence artist Capt Matt Gauldie was commissioned to create the larger-than-life bronze of Sapper Horace Moore-Jones called The Line of Fire. It is sited in Victoria Street overlooking the heritage place where the Gallipoli soldier-artist and teacher Horace Moore-Jones gave his life in the Hamilton Hotel fire of 1922.

The artwork symbolises the origins of Anzac Day and our sense of nationhood, portraying Moore-Jones in the stony Gallipoli battlefield, mapping enemy positions and the hostile terrain. You can look through the camera lens on his bag and see images from WWI. The statue marks the centenary of the First World War and the Gallipoli Campaign, plus the city of Hamilton’s history and the 150th anniversary of our military settlement.
